So I picked up Star Wars issue #40…

Hey folks, its been a while I know. I quit reviewing the main Star Wars title around issue #25ish? Well being the miserable person that I am I decided after a year to pick it back up, and I’m glad I did.

Star Wars: Stormtroopers Beyond the Armor

Recently I saw a Stormtrooper hardback book was being released and like most behind the scene books based on Star Wars licenses (the movies, Rebels, CW etc) I was going to pass on it and maybe skim it at a Barnes&Noble later as I usually do. And I did. But while skimming it I was pleasantly surprised and purchased it.

Rhode Island ComicCon report

So this last weekend was Rhode Island ComicCon. My wife and I had been there 3 times in the past, always as vendors, but decided to go for the weekend just as attendees and one of the reasons was a non SW guest who unfortunately had to cancel. (Which is not unheard of for conventions. Pretty much every Walking Dead guest had to back out last minute due to filming commitments.)

There were a few SW guests there, one of which was Julian Glover who played General Veers. I mentioned how George, our co-host on the podcast, runs VeersWatch. Not sure he knew what I was talking about or maybe just had trouble hearing what I said as we learned later. Seemed like a nice guy. Also attending was Joonas Suotamo whose taking over Peter Mayhew’s role as the new Chewy…. “Newbacca” I guess? I thought one of the actors who played Vader in Rogue One was there but the he was not at the SW panel we attended so maybe another cancellation.

As for SW action figure merch to be found….. Cue cricket noises. Well, there wasn’t much. There was one vendor who had a fair amount of vintage both loose and in box and another vendor with some graded vintage figures. A few 6″ inch Black Series here or there. Just one vendor had anything I was interested in. There I was able to get the Kmart VC two pack of AT ST Drivers for $15. Not bad.

I was pleasantly surprised to see Boss Fight Studios were vendors. You may have heard us talk about them on the podcast. They are a niche action figure company made up of some ex-Hasbro sculptors. They make super articulated 4″ figures and have a couple lines like Fantasy, Medieval, etc. What I wanted to pick up was one of their figure blanks. You can get a “plain” male or female body which comes with a couple different heads, hands, feet, and a stand. These are great for using to make custom figures of your own. I picked up a blank to use for an original custom character. Here’s a link to their site:¬†

However, what I really like finding at conventions are loose modern figures and in that department I found absolutely none. NOT. A. SINGLE. ONE.¬† There weren’t even any large totes filled with POTF2 and prequel figures. A bit of a wasteland. But the POPS. Oh those damn Funko POPS were everywhere. This fad needs to die already.

Sunday, we didn’t go to the show and instead left early. Missed a couple panels but it was a 6.5 hour drive and we had seen everything we really wanted to and the crowds had be horrible on Saturday. Elbow to elbow and I’m not sure why the fire marshall didn’t cap the amount of people in some areas.

Site Updates

I recently started updating some elements of the site to more closely focus of the things we talk about most here like collecting and customizing. So we now have a customs section for figures and dioramas. Hope to bring you more in the future as we continue to streamline the site.
